Topic: Spin Slash sprites (High Quality image rips from E3 demo video)

Alright I'm gonna start working on Spin Slash sprites here soon. I just wanted to make this clear so if anyone else is working on it as well please post here. Here are the goals of the project:

  • *Capture frame-by-frame images from the E3 demo video featuring the Spin Slash.
    - I will attempt to get the sprites of Sonic going into the Spin Slash as well as the Spin Slash itself.

    - Total of 39 images captured covering the span of 2 seconds. Went ahead and did a very rough crop of one of the frames just for the sake of showing the possibility. It needs a lot of cleaning before I consider it a decent sprite. Despite this the sprite actually looks fairly decent when shrunk down to a much smaller size (see the difference between the png file attached and my avatar).
-Judging by the pure amount of time it takes to work on 1 frame, I might need to make very rare updates from this point on. Taking the backgrounds out is going to be extremely time consuming and it's something I won't be putting high on my priority list due to work and such. I have the images uploaded in an archive so anyone else who wants to take part in this simply post here in this thread. I do apologize for not having more to offer at this point but I gave anyone who wants to take on this project a great starting point.

  • Remove the background from each frame (longest portion of the process).

  • Attempt some copy/paste work to compensate for the portions of the sprite that go off screen during the demo.

Re: Spin Slash sprites (High Quality image rips from E3 demo video)

Sorry man,
I've already got some Spin-Slash textures and they are almost finished.
The way that I made them was by actually camera match modeling the SpinSlash spikes to the video. This allows multiple view possibilities from all sides.
After the models were rendered I than took them into Photoshop and overlaid them on top of a sonic ball sprite.

What's left to do is to emulate the reflections shown in the video.

P.S. its ok if you want to continue your sprite work, lets see what you can come up with.

Nah if you've got it then I'll go ahead and call it a day.

Thanks for the willingness to attempt the sprite.

I'll probably keep this open for another week or so for anyone who might be interested then delete it. Also have you checked your email?

big_smile

i actually liked the HD  cool

but there is still something found in the HD video we dont have and thats the shield. when sonic rolls through the sonic x-treme sign he has the shield on.

if you can properly rip these we can get the correct color of the sheila  and then convert the sonic sprites to the correct hue ?>

They wouldn't match the game no mater how much they are cleaned.
The perspective is off, Also I'm not so sure that is a shield, could be some inproper pixel color's around the border where an alpha mask could be. ( Im just guessing that they ran a sprite in front of the logo, its hard to tell.)

Also, I have sent an email to my Sonic Xtreme contact in regards to in game shields.
In the systems folder/shields there is a few textures that remind me of displacement maps of some sort.

http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/8093/shieldsa.png

A closer look, I'm betting that these could be used to produce a sort of magnifying glass distortion effect. They are named DISP which could be short for Displacement. (i'm probably way off)

Re: Spin Slash sprites (High Quality image rips from E3 demo video)

the sprites could match

the only way for this to be done would be

1. rip the HD sprites from the video

2. change hue to match color since sonic is blue all over when he has the shield

3. get proper ANM sprites and change them to the proper all blue hue

4 .enlarge sprites make all white and glow

5.put   enlarged glow sprites under proper ANM corrected hue sprites

then we should have the glow cool

Re: Spin Slash sprites (High Quality image rips from E3 demo video)

its nice we discussed the shield wink

but now id like to talk about the HD Spin Slash sprites

ive reviewed your recreation i like it, it suites well however lets take a quick look compaired

http://imageshack.us/scaled/landing/543/campar.png

[not a correct re-size no touch ups done to theonlykyd's recreation] to the left and your recreation to the right

your recreation is very pleasing to the eye however i do think if theonlykyd does finish this we would have a more accurate spin slash sprite with some touch ups who knows i mite be able to recreate the spin slash sprite i think theonlykyd should continure cool

Re: Spin Slash sprites (High Quality image rips from E3 demo video)

thinking of this i just relized spriting this from different angles is going to be a nightmare unless the attack is only a side view attack ?

and if it is a 360 attack then if you already have the spikes modeled then it could be rotated for a 360 attack

smile

ultmintly i think the video frames rip will help with the recreation. in the picture above i thnik i sized the sprite correctly i think your spikes are a tiny tiny tiny bit longer than they should be.  i was able to see this when i added sonics roll sprite in the sprite

Looking good. However mine was just a proof of concept. will come back later after the next demo to do some work on it.

Edit:
The one I did also has a different rendering camera angle to match the overhead view of the standard sprites. also at the time it was done, I had a really bad video to catch details with compared to the new video.

Anyways lets see what other angles can be done with your guys stratagy.

Speaking of the next demo, will it be avaible soon?

I'm trying as best as I can ... >__<,
I hope it can make it by months end. I did want to get spinshash in , but it will have to wait till the next release.

Re: Spin Slash sprites (High Quality image rips from E3 demo video)

Yeah due to the fact that there are also front/back angles to do this method won't cover that. I think using a 3d model then making sprites from it is definitely the way to go.

I think that it would be nice to have cleaned up reference images before I model the new spikes.
The cleaner the source material is, the closer I can replicate the geometry.

Re: Spin Slash sprites (High Quality image rips from E3 demo video)

Well one thing that has somewhat caught my attention was that the entire spin slash segment of the ad was pre rendered and was not tied to the gameplay. This is notable by just how close up the camera is to Sonic, the off-centering, and the fact that the spikes seem to reflect the lighting from the stage in the background (something that would very likely not be in the final product)

Also something that I can see will probably be a little troublesome for you is that animation going into the spikes. As you can see with the ad they grow out of Sonic over the span of some number of frames.

21

Re: Spin Slash sprites (High Quality image rips from E3 demo video)

I've got Animations and reflections coverd, If you look closely enough, the spikes are actually using a cube-map or sphere map type effect for the reflections. the same reflection can be seen in most rendered images,  Including many badnicks, and a few of the promotional renders of Sonic himself.

When modeling the spines I'm using a camera matching technique to produce our Spinslash spine models.
I'll camera match the Spinshash itself and model over it. When it comes time to do sprite rendering, the camera will be moved to match the sonic sprite angles,
I have camera matched sonic in the past to collect data retaining to Field of view and rotation. So yeah the data is waiting to be used. All thanks to the proof of concept spinslash and a few other experiments I've done in the past.

Re: Spin Slash sprites (High Quality image rips from E3 demo video)

I know that I should not post this just yet as its not finished, and I know purists are going to bitch moan and complain that the chrome reflections are not accurate, and the spikes themselves may be a bit thick , yada yada yada.
Still need to tweak that, just wanted to show what I have so far. the blue ball itself wont be rendered when its time to make the sprites. the spikes will be composited over the original sonic ball sprite in photoshop.
